The Daily Pulse:

SXSW Diary, Part 3

Running on about three hours of sleep, about an hour north of Dallas: SXSW went out with a bang on Saturday. I couldn't get into the Royal Bangs' afternoon performance at Rachael Ray's big cookout blowout, but made up for it with a showcase forthe indie metal label Profound Lore at a tiny dive called Lovejoy's, featuring crusty Minneapolis band Wolvhammer (who aren't nearly as cool as their name), SF post-metal newcomers Deafheaven, and RI arty doom trio the Body, who might just be the loudest band I've ever heard.

After a break for dinner, I finally got a full night of music, starting with Young Empires, a disco-soul trio from Toronto, and--finally, at last--the Royal Bangs, who played a short, guitar-heavy set. It was the band's ninth (!) show of the week; drummer Chris Rusk said heLd had about 10 hours of sleep since Wednesday. There were about 100 people in the converted warehouse at the Windish House, from cool club kids and frat boys to a couple of grungy 30ish number-one fans who danced all the way through and knew all the words.

Then down the road to the Scoot Inn, a midsize outdoor venue ful of middleaged burnouts, bikers, and other dudes with tattoos on their faces. New Orleans' sludge legends Eyehategod lurched through a 40-minute set of classic songs to set up Va. Doom pioneers Pentagram, featuring Knoxville's Victor Griffin.
