The Daily Pulse:

TVA Gets Literary

We meant to blog about this yesterday, but we got distracted by other work, and then there was the sunshine, and then there were all the people in terrible green clothes to make fun of on Market Square, and then ...

Anyway, in one of our favorite presidential appointments ever, Barack Obama yesterday nominated Richard Howorth to the board of TVA. Howorth was the mayor of Oxford, Miss., for eight years. He also is the owner (along with his lovely wife Lisa) of one of the best independent bookstores in America, Square Books

In the matter of full disclosure, this reporter should probably tell you that she knows Howorth from her time in Oxford and has spent large sums of money at Square. (It might not be an untruth, in fact, that Square is the thing she misses most about Oxford, other than her friends, of course.) But you can take her word on it that while the Howorths may be known in some literary circles for fabulous parties, Richard Howorth is also a very smart man.

We like smart people, and we like smart people in government running things, so we really like Howorth's appointment. We also secretly hope if the appointment is approved by the Senate, little mini Square Books storefronts will open in TVA's headquarters in Knoxville and Chattanooga. Because that would be amazing.
