Ah, well. As predicted a month ago, and despite some pressure from LGBT advocates and allies, Governor Bill Haslam still signed HB0600 into law on Monday, as reported by the Tennessean. Officially named the Equal Access to Intrastate Commerce Act, detractors referred to HB0600 as the Special Access to Discriminate Act, or SAD, because it effectively keeps local governments from extending LGBT-inclusive workplace protections to employees of contractors--essentially allowing discrimination against LGBT people by companies doing business with local Tennessee governments. The new law reverses an April bill passed in Metro Nashville extending just such protection to workers in its area.
