The good news? City officials reportedly identified "severe drainage issues" at World's Fair Park's South Lawn before the big multiple-act country hoedown headlined by Willie Nelson, scheduled for the site next month, turned into a sludgy, swampy mess.
The bad news? The show has now been moved to the altogether less fun Civic Coliseum, which, whatever kind of fond memories you have of seeing arena-sized shows there in the 1970s and '80s, is an outdated, unsightly, and uncomfortable venue, especially for an event that's scheduled to last six hours.
Still, the show--officially titled "Willie Nelson's Country Throwdown," and part of a national package tour that's winding up next month--promises Nelson, who, come on, is Willie Nelson, and Jamey Johnson, who is probably the awesomest male country singer to emerge in the last decade and who owes Nelson and the Outlaw movement a significant debt.
Also on the bill: Lee brice, Randy Houser, Craig Campbell, and Brantley Gilbert, plus a bunch of other rising singers on the second and third stages, which will be on the plaza and main lawn outside the Coliseum. (The Coliseum has a lawn?)
The Throwdown hits the Coliseum on Sunday, June 19, at 6 p.m. Tickets are available here.
