As much as we like to think all the people who came out for last weekend's 20Fest were there just to congratulate Metro Pulse on its 20th anniversary, we know better. It was the music lineup--more than 40 bands spread over eight venues downtown and in the Old City, representing more than two decades of Knoxville music--that convinced more than 1,000 people to pay for admission to the festival. And most of them seemed to have as much fun as the MP staff did, wandering from Market Square down to Jackson Avenue and back again, dancing, drinking, catching up with old friends and new artists, and, best of all, supporting the Joy of Music School. All proceeds from the festival--a grand total of $10,611, after expenses--was raised for the local nonprofit, which provides free music instruction to underprivileged children.
Against all the odds, the festival went off without a hitch. The only complaint we heard all night was that there was too much music, and no way to see all of it, which seems like a pretty good problem for a local scene to have, and a dilemma that music fans face almost any weekend night in Knoxville anyway. It went so well, in fact, that we're already starting to think about how to celebrate MP's 21st birthday next year.
So thanks to everybody who came out to support local music, all the performers, all the volunteers, all the participating venues, and the Joy of Music School for making 20Fest an awesome good time!
