Holy cats! The dog days of summer are turning into a hamster wheel of endless local political debate. Uh. Or something like that. The point is, everybody's getting into the candidate-forum act. In addition to the mayoral debate on homeless issues we brought to your attention yesterday, here are some more dates for local political junkies to put on their calendars:
-- Aug. 18: South Knoxville Neighborhood and Business Coalition Forum, 7 p.m., Woodlawn Christian Church, 4339 Woodlawn Pike. Alan Williams of WVLT-TV will moderate a forum that all mayoral candidates except Ivan Harmon have committed to attend (Harmon is sending a representative). Most of the At-Large Council candidates will be there, too, to address questions and concerns of particular interest to South Knoxville residents.
-- Aug. 25: Knox Heritage Forum, 11:30 a.m., the Square Room. KH chief Kim Trent will moderate a forum for mayoral and City Council candidates on issues of historic preservation, with questions submitted by members of the public. One catch: The forum is open only to candidates who answered a Knox Heritage questionnaire. Those are mayoral candidates Bo Bennett, Joe Hultquist, Mark Padgett, and Madeline Rogero; and Council contenders Paul Berney, John Stancil, and George Wallace (At Large Seat A); Marshall Stair (At Large Seat B); Finbarr Saunders (At Large Seat C); and Mark Campen (5th District).
-- Aug. 30: Young Professional Mayoral Debate & Political Symposium, 6:30 p.m., Knoxville Museum of Art. The mayoral candidates are invited to answer questions from Knoxville's "young professional" population, though we understand they will not be checking ages at the door, so you can probably go even if you're not very young. Or professional.
