Despite our skepticism, Knox County Schools actually managed to get a new magnet school up and running in the old L&N building for the start of this school year. What they haven't done yet is name the thing. So from now through Sept. 5, school officials are asking for suggestions from the general public. Most Knox County schools are named for the communities they serve, though there are a few named after prominent people (like Sarah Moore Greene and A.L. Lotts). But with the L&N school specializing in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) subjects, we imagine the school honchos are looking for something a little more razzle-dazzle than just Henley-Western Intersection Academy. We're fond of the Super-Brainy Whiz Kid School for Lasers, Robots, Rockets and Time Travel. But that might not fit on a T-shirt.
Anyway, if you have an idea, fire it off to Superintendent Jim McIntyre at superintendent@knoxschools.org.
