From Metro Pulse contributor Rikki Hall:
This Friday is Women's Equality Day, commemorating adoption in 1920 of the 19th Amendment giving women the right to vote. The local League of Women Voters chapter has decided to start a tradition of leaving yellow roses at the suffrage statue on Market Square on this date. Yellow roses symbolized support of women's suffrage while the amendment was being ratified, and it was Tennessee's ratification that made the amendment part of our Constitution.
Please participate by leaving a yellow rose at the statue on Friday!
Several businesses on the square will have roses available either for sale or free with a purchase, and I will provide more details as those arrangements get finalized. Alternately, you could purchase a yellow rose from your neighborhood florist and bring it downtown.
