You'd think that with the Legislature out of session, we might at least get a breather from the anti-gay bile and bigotry that has become a staple of Tennessee conservatism. Sadly, no. In the Chattanooga Times Free Press, Andy Sher reports on the latest rantings of David Fowler. Fowler is a former state senator who now runs the Family Action Council of Tennessee, the same group that brought you last spring's attempt to sneak creationism into the classroom. (FACT is affiliated with the national religious-right powerhouse Focus on the Family.)
Apparently, Fowler is all aghast that BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee is looking to diversify its base of vendors by reaching out to "companies that classify as small, disadvantaged, minority, women, service-disabled veteran, veteran-owned, HUB-zone [low-income areas] and lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender owned businesses." To Fowler, this amounts to the insurance company supporting "the advancement and cultural acceptance of homosexual conduct." That's right: David Fowler hates gay people so much he doesn't even want anyone to do business with them. Because, you know, then they'll have enough money to eat. And if they eat, maybe they'll have enough surplus energy to HAVE GAY SEX!
And David Fowler obviously spends a lot of time thinking about people having gay sex.
