The Daily Pulse:

Mayoral Sniping Continues on Twitter

The mayoral run-off is in full swing, and Mark Padgett and Madeline Rogero have started to take shots at each other, as we reported yesterday. Now the candidates have taken to Twitter.

Yesterday afternoon, @madelinerogero tweeted, "In the primary, Madeline spent $26 per vote, but Mark spent $94. Fiscally responsible? What would a world-class CEO say?"

Several hours later, @votepadgett tweeted, "Hope Ms. Rogero will stop slinging mud & focus on issues/ideas to move #Knoxville forward. Look forward to seeing her plan."

Just a few minutes ago, @madelinerogero responded, "My position has been clear from the start of my campaign. I invite you to take a look and get involved!", followed by a link to her campaign kick-off speech.

Why are we bringing you this incredibly important, life-changing news, other than it's Friday afternoon and we don't have anything better to do? Well, it turns out not that many people are following either candidate on Twitter. So if we didn't report it, who would?

As of this writing, Rogero has 415 followers and Padgett has 359 followers. Compare that to former mayor Bill Haslam, who has 10,592 followers, or the Knoxville Chamber of Commerce, which has 2,946 followers. And given that Rogero is paying two different people to manage her social media, you'd think they could at least collect some spambots and up her Klout score. (Hint: Tweet about marketing, porn, and dieting. You'll have 20 new "followers" within the hour.)

We know there's not much interest in the election, but given the number of young, enthusiastic supporters both candidates have, we're really surprised at this low online turnout. Thus, expect us to keep you informed of any future Twitter spats as the race continues. We want you voters as informed as possible before November!
