Blue Monday
Downtown's revival has come with a startling new development: businesses that are closed on Mondays. For years, Monday evening has been the slowest restaurant retail night of the week; several restaurants that serve dinner most nights of the week close on Monday after lunch. But it used to be only art museums were closed all day on Mondays. Just lately, a few restaurants and bars, all of them relatively new, are responding to the popularity of downtown on weekends by trying the previously outlandish Tuesday-through-Sunday model: the Jig and Reel, Harry's Deli, and Just Ripe have been closed all day on Mondays.
It's a phenomenon unheard of in Knoxville history, we suspect--though maybe sensible, especially with businesses that have very small staffs who've lately been seeing their busiest days on weekends. It's a little disconcerting, though, when we're trying to show visitors our interesting new businesses, as happened with a foreign travel writer recently, and they happen to be here on a Monday.
Of the above, Just Ripe is planning to return to seven-day service by the first week of spring.
