Friday
At 4:30--after the kiddos get out of school--why not take them over to the Birdhouse for some free art instruction? Children 5+ are welcome, and donations are accepted.
Smart Toys and Books will host a family game night for free at 5:30. They'll show you how to play some games appropriate for kids (and adults!) age 3+, and then you can go to town yourselves. Call (865)-691-1154 for more info.
"Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street" will be put on tonight at 7:30 at the Clarence Brown Theatre. Tickets are $10-$60. Buy them here. This 1979 classic is not to be missed! (Though Johnny Depp won't be in this production, at least one Knoxville native will--Dale Dickey as Mrs. Lovett!)
At 8 p.m., Dr. Hook with the Detroit Daddies will take the stage at the Shed in Maryville. Tickets to see these 60's and 70's classic rockers are $20. Buy them here!
Denver rockabillies Slim Cessna's Auto Club and Big Bad Oven are playing the Pilot Light tonight at 10. Cover is $8. For the 18+ crowd only.
Saturday
After spending the day outside (maybe?), come on home to a bunch of great shows--none of which are to be missed!
At 8 p.m., these shows are on:
-Truckstop Darlin' will play a free show at the Preservation Pub. For the 21+ crowd only.
-The Kentucky Headhunters and Chris Janson will play at the Shed in Maryville. Tickets are $25. Buy them here.
-Check out the Giggles-N-Grooves Comedy Night at Latitude 35. Tickets to the stand-up comedy event are $10. 18+ only.
-TXW Presents Wrestling in the Rita Building on Washington Pike. Dave Pillman, Bobby Blassie, Sweet Dreams, Forsaken Angels Guild, and more will be featured. Tickets are $5. Call (865)-219-7291 for more info.
At 9 p.m., Anna Kline and the Grits and Soul Band will play a free show at Boyd's Jig and Reel for the 18+ crowd. Be there!
The Valarium's Saturday Night Dance Party got a change of Name--it's now Taboo, and it starts at 9 p.m. Cover is $5, and you must be 18 to attend.
Finally, wizard rapper Lil Iffy with Heatstroke and Tom Ato will take the stage at 10 p.m. at the Well. It's free for the 21+ crowd. And if you're a Harry Potter fan, this is honestly not a show to be missed!
Sunday
On Sunday morning, the Rationalists of East Tennessee will meet at 10:30 at Pellissippi State Community College to discuss World War I. Call (865)-482-4680 or visit the group's website for more info.
The Boomsday celebration of Labor Day officially kicks off at 1 p.m. at Volunteer Landing.
Misty River will be playing for the Boomsday, Bluegrass, and Barbeque at Mabry-Hazen House at 6 p.m. It's $50 to attend the barbeque.
Later, head over to the Preservation Pub to see King Super and the Excellents, Johnny Astro, and the Big Bang play at 10 p.m. Cover is $5; for the 21+ crowd.
Monday
The Knoxville Track Club will host a one- and five-mile race in memory of co-founder Hal Canfield at 7:30 a.m. in Sequoyah Park. Get there at 6:30 to register on the day. Go here for registration information.
At 6 p.m., head over to the Hilltop Vineyard for the Wine, Women and Poetry Open Mic Night. David Rasnik will perform.
The Oak Ridge Community Band will play a concert in celebration of Labor Day at 7 p.m. in Alvin K. Bissell Park in Oak Ridge.
The Birdhouse will open its walk-in theater and host a free movie (with popcorn!) as it does every Monday from 8 to 10 p.m.
Also at 8, the grand finale of the Jazz on the Square series will start. The Knoxville Jazz Orchestra's Labor Day concert is, of course, free, so don't miss it!
Afterward, head over to the Preservation Pub and check out New York blues rockers the Jonny Monster Band with the Pine Hill Haints. Cover is $3; for the 21+ crowd only.
