The Daily Pulse:

J's is taking the month off

J's Mega Mart, downtown Knoxville's own offbeat hybrid of a New York bodega and Walmart, will be closing for the month of November. Just the month. The family's taking a rare vacation, a trip to their native South Korea.

J's has been there on the 400 block of Gay Street for as long as we can remember, the cheapest place to buy basic supplies, through good times and bad, with a schedule impervious to downtown trends: Monday through Saturday until 6 p.m. A couple of years ago, they did close for several months as developers discussed other uses for their buildings on a suddenly fashionable block, but then they reopened, unchanged, as if nothing had happened.

For those 30 days of November, we'll have to satisfy our Coke, hardware, jewelry, cigarette, notepad, medicine, umbrella, sardine and wig needs elsewhere. They'll reopen in time for Christmas shopping season in December. We shall miss them, but they deserve the break.
