Trumpeter/band leader of the Knoxville Jazz Orchestra Vance Thompson will pay tribute to Miles Davis and Chet Davis today at noon in the Square Room. Tickets are $15, which includes lunch during the show!
Also at noon, Elizabeth Davidson will put on a one-woman production in the East Tennessee History Center called "Harriet Beecher Stowe: A Literary Warrior," which is a dramatic tale of the Uncle Tom's Cabin author's life. It's $25 to attend.
Minoo Askari, a science professor at Pellissippi State Community College, will speak there at 2 p.m. today about the story of Henrietta Lacks, a cancer patient whose cancer cells were taken without her knowledge in 1951 and used for extensive research into polio, cloning, gene mapping, HIV/AIDS treatment, tuberculosis, and cancer. Lacks was the subject of a recent New York Times best-seller The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot.
Canadian bass and dubstep producer Excision will perform at 6 p.m. at the Old City's outdoor courtyard stage with Paper Diamond and Vaski. Bass drops and mind-blowing graphics will probably go down. Tickets are $25. Buy them here. 18+ only.
The Orion Astronomy Club will meet tonight at 7 in the Grove Theatre (Oak Ridge). Lonnie Puterbaugh, winner of the Astronomy Society of the Pacific's 2011 Las Cumbres Amateur Outreach Award, will be on hand to discuss "psychological strategies of 'awe' in astronomy outreach."
