The Weekend Plan-It: Memorial Day Edition

Good morning! Three day weekend ahead for a lot of you!! And barbeque. Oh, man. Don't forget that KAT buses will run on the Saturday schedule on Monday. Till then, here's what you can get up to.

FRIDAY
Big Jon and the Nationals will play for WDVX's Blue Plate Special at noon in the visitor center with Carli and Julie Kennedy. As always, it's free to attend!

Diane Cecala's collection "Diane's Art Play," which includes several works from the 1990's, will be on display from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Center for Creative Minds (23 Emory Place). Be sure to stop by before June 1. 

The Collies will play at the Grove Theater in Oak Ridge at 7 p.m. with the Sea Legs. It's $3-$5 to get in! 

Rock/country/folk icon Leon Russell will play at the Shed in Maryville at 8 p.m. with Otis Gibbs. Tickets are $25. Buy them here.

At 10 p.m., the Crumbsnatchers will play at the Well with O Youth and Backup Planet. It's $5 to get in. 21+ only.

SATURDAY
Celebrate Tennessee's statehood anniversary this weekend at the Marble Springs Historic Site, where you'll be able to get a sense of what life was like in the 18th century. This FREE event starts at 10 a.m. and goes until 5 p.m. Donations will be accepted.

At 1 p.m. on Market Square, there will be a March Against Monsanto. Learn more about the food company and genetically modified foods. For more info, email marchonmonsantoknoxville@gmail.com.

In their first home game of the season, the Hard Knox Roller Girls will take on Christianburg, Va.'s, New RIver Valley Roller Girls at 6 p.m. in the Civic Auditorium and Coliseum. Tickets are $10-$12.

EDM group PANTyRAiD will take over the Old City Courtyard at 6 p.m. with Salva and Spooky Jones.TIckets are $15-$20. Buy them here.

East Tennessee bluegrass band Blue Moon Rising will celebrate the release of their new album Blue Side of the Moon with a performance at 7:30 at the Palace Theatre in Maryville. Tickets are $20. Here's how to buy them.

Shooter Jennings and the Triple Crown will play with Kelsey's Woods at 8 p.m. at the Shed in Maryville. Tickets to that show are $20. Buy them here.

NIght Beds will play at the Pilot Light with Jenny O. TIckets are $10. 18+ only.

SUNDAY
Work off brunch at Circle Modern Dance's open-level modern technique dance class at 2 p.m. at the Emporium Center for Arts and Culture. The first class you take with the group is free, and $5 for every subsequent class. 

Best-selling historical novelist Jeff Shaara will read from his newest book Chain of Thunder and sign copies at the East Tennessee History Center at 3 p.m. It's free to attend!

Metal supergrop Heallyeah will perform at NV Nightclub at 7 p.m. Tickets are $20-$25. Buy them here.

At 8, head over to the Preservation Pub for the weekly Upstairs Underground Stand-Up Comedy Show. No cover! 21+ only.

MONDAY (MEMORIAL DAY)
If you're one of the lucky ones that get Memorial day off, sleep in and head over to the visitor center at noon to check out Alex Culbreth and the Dead Country Stars play for WDVX's Blue Plate Special with Scott Mulvahill. While you're there, you can pick up your Tennessee Shines tickets for later in the evening.

At 5:30, the Tennessee Valley Unitarian Universalist Church will have a gentle yoga and meditation class. Donations will be accepted. For more info cal (865) 577-2021 or email yogaway249@gmail.com.

Chip Taylor will play for WDVX's Tennessee Shines show at 7 p.m. in the visitor center. Tickets are $10.

Also at 7, the Oak Ridge Community Band will have its Memorial Day Concert at Alvin K. Bissell Park. It's free to attend!

The Well's Comedy Con Queso night starts at 9. Open a tab, and you get free cheese. No cover. 21+ only.
