The Weekend Plan-It: Beer and Ballet, Kentucky Headhunters, and Boomsday

Woo! It's the weekend! And it's a long weekend! And a game weekend! Here's what's going on (besides the obvious).

Internationally exhibited potter Lisa Kurtz will have her work on display at the District Gallery, which opens at 10 a.m. There will also be a reception at 5:30 p.m.

At noon in the visitors center, Rachel Brooke will play for WDVX's Blue Plate Special with Todd Steed and the Suns of Phere. As always, it's free to attend.

The Appalachian Ballet Company will host the fund raiser "Beer and Ballet" at the Square Room at 7 p.m. Beer tasting and music from Robinella will be involved. Tickets are $30. Buy them here.

Tim Wilson will bring his brand of southern, libertarian humor to Sidesplitters Comedy Club at 7:45 p.m. Tickets are $16-$22. Buy them here. 18+ only.

Wrap up the night at the Well, where Mike McGill and the Refills will play at 9 p.m. with Brendon James Wright and Poe Hannah. Cover's $5. 21+ only.

Get up early and head over to the Market Square Farmers' Market to pick up some veggies for the grill while you tailgate. It starts at 9 a.m. and goes until 2 p.m.

At 11 a.m., get in a work out by belly dancing at Alexia's School of Middle Eastern Dance. The class costs $12. For more info, call (865) 898-2126 or email

The Children's Theatre of Knoxville will present "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer" at 5 p.m. Tickets are $12. To purchase them, email, or call (865) 599-5284.

The Kentucky Headhunters will perform at the Shed in Maryville at 8 p.m. with the Cathouse Prophets. Tickets are $20. Buy them here.

Wrap up the night at the Preservation Pub, where Baseball the Band will play at 10 with 3Tree. Cover's $5. 21+ only.

The annual Boomsday event gets started at 1 p.m. on Volunteer Landing. Go check out kids' bounce houses, performances from Amanda Cramer and Soulfinger, and, of course, the big fireworks show at 9:30. 

Meanwhile, the Mabry-Hazen house will hold its annual Boomsday barbeque at 6 p.m. Attendees will get a nice hilltop view of the fireworks. It's $50 to attend.

Not into hanging out with hundreds of thousands people? Head over to the Preservation Pub at 8 p.m. for the Upstairs Underground Stand-Up Comedy Show. It's free to attend! 21+ only.
