The Daily Pulse:

K-Town South: SummerFest and a Chef's Table

Here's this week's look at things to do in South Knoxville, aka K-Town South:

Make Summer Official at SummerFest

What: SummerFest 2014
Where: Yester Years Vintage (235 W. Young High Pike)
When: Saturday, June 14, 8 a.m.-5 p.m.
Cost: Free

It's South Knox all the way when dozens of vendors and a band called Kudzu gather at Yester Years Vintage to provide, in their own words, "food, fun, merriment, and prizes."

"We'll just have a good old time," says Yester Years owner Pete Skramstad. The antique mall will also have all manner of stuff for sale: handmade soap and candles, antiques, crafts, retro pieces, and "one man's trash is another man's treasure" items. Love That BBQ is the featured eatery.

Ah, the good old summer time.

Tip: Pete still has booths available: call him at 567-2755.

Circle the
Culinary Globe at Sweet P's BBQ

What: Chef's Table at the Soul House
Where: Sweet P's Barbecue and Soul House (3725 Maryville Pike)
When: Monday, June 16, 6:30 p.m.
Cost: $60 per diner; make reservations at 804-4843; limited seats available

Ambitious and delicious, Sweet P's is hosting a second Chef's Table, this time with chefs Eddie Faircloth and Joshua Russell doing the honors. The theme: "Reflections of Our Sister Cities," with each of six courses inspired by one of Knoxville's seven sister cities: Chelm, Poland; Chengdu, China; Larissa, Greece; Neuquén, Argentina; Muroran, Japan; Yesan County, South Korea; and Kaohsiung, Taiwan. Wine and beer pairings make the meal that much more memorable.

Can't make that date? Sweet P's proper will be here all summer, with access by boat (along the Tennessee River) or car. They're always serving up slow-smoked sweetness; brisket and ribs and Smoke 'N Soul Chicken--decisions, decisions. And the banana pudding and Tomato 'N Blues salad are well worth a mention. Or get saucy! They've got an East Tennessee thick version, a North Carolina-East Tennessee thin vinegar-based version, and a "show me the water or perhaps a cold beer" version involving chipotle and some other secret stuff. Enjoy!

Tip: Sweet P's is closed Mondays but has jamming daily specials, like Wednesday's Red Beans and Rice with Andouille sausage or Thursday's smoked meatloaf, finished with chipotle ketchup. For more information:
